What is a Zippo cam spring?

For those of you who are not familiar with Zippo, a cam spring is a plate spring part that holds down the cam.

Please take a look at this image.

The cam spring is the plate shaped part attached to the protruding part of the wick by the gold colored clasp.

To understand the role of this part, try to raise or lower the cam without closing the lid.

You will see that the cam spring holds the cam in place from below, causing the cam to click and move with great energy.

The Zippo lid is supported by the cam spring via the cam. It is thanks to the cam spring that the Zippo’s lid opens and closes with a jerk and a snap.

The cam spring loses its springing ability if the Zippo is opened and closed too many times.

It is one of the parts that should be replaced and maintained when the movement of the lid loses its springiness, or when the lid is half-open when it is turned upside down.

How to replace a Zippo cam spring

What to prepare

Zippo
Cam spring for replacement
Rivet for replacement
Pliers
Tweezers
Mallet
Center punch
Squared timber
Supplemental information
The squared wood is used as a fixture to support the cam spring in this way.

Therefore, anything smaller than the windbreak guard is fine.

Caution

There is one thing you should do before replacing the cam springs, so here it is.

If the replacement cam spring has a flat shape as shown in the image below, the plate spring will not be effective when it is replaced.

So, in such a case, use pliers or nippers to bend it slightly to make the plate spring work properly.

Here is a genuine cam spring removed from a Zippo. When replacing it, please bend it like this.

Replacement procedure

・To remove the cam springs, remove the rivets (clamps) securing the cam springs.

Outline drawing of removing the rivet

The cam sprong is fixed with rivets like this.

Therefore

↑Crush this part spreading on the trumpet with pliers.

↑and round it off like this to remove the rivet.

・As explained in the outline drawing, use pliers to round off the rivet’s upper part.

Caution
If you do not want to damage the inside unit at this time, be careful not to scratch it with the pliers.

・Here is the progress.

・If the rivet is at an angle that makes it difficult to crush with the pliers, you can adjust the angle by rotating the rivet with tweezers.

・Adjust the angle and crush the rivet again. This is a very persistent work.

・When the rivet is sufficiently crushed, it will come off.

・Once the cam spring is removed, the next step is to secure the new one.

・Fit the cam spring, taking care of the direction and angle, and insert the rivet. It is easier to do this with tweezers.

・Apply the fitting from above, turn it upside down, and fix it firmly in place.

・The rivets are fixed in the reverse order of when they were removed using the center punch.

Outline drawing of fixing rivets

The rivet is secured by expanding the hole in the new rivet by hitting it with a hammer to make it into a trumpet shape.

・Tap the rivet lightly with a mallet.

・If the cam springs are firmly secured, the replacement is complete!
